Taking part in the Mountie Classic, the Cerritos College men's basketball team picked up three wins, which snapped a two-game losing streak. The Falcons (8-2) opened with an 77-53 win over Imperial Valley College and followed that with an 82-73 decision over Merritt College. They capped off the third day by defeating the host Mounties, 63-58. The team will now get a few days off before traveling to take on Allan Hancock College in a non-conference game.
Cerritos vs. Imperial Valley: In a balanced offensive attack, the Falcons had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore Demetrius Thomas (Bassick, CT, Porterville College), who led the way with 18 points and five steals, along with seven rebounds. Netting a pair of three-pointers, sophomore Keshaun Mack (Long Beach Jordan HS/Antelope Valley College) contributed 14 points, while freshman Isaiah Tyler (Redondo Union HS) and sophomore Jonathan Guzman (Paramount HS) came off the bench to contribute 11 and 10 points, respectively, while they also combined for six rebounds and six assists. Freshman Cody Wilkes (La Mirada HS) dropped a trio of three-pointers to account for his nine points, with sophomore Jason Carter (View Park HS/Santa Monica College) leading the team with eight rebounds.
Cerritos vs. Merritt: On the second night, Thomas converted 7-of-12 field goals and led all players with 23 points and 14 rebounds in a winning cause. Carter was an effective 6-for-9 from the field and added 15 points and five boards, while sophomore Malik Smith (Gahr HS) stepped into the starting lineup and posted 10 points and three rebounds. Tyler was 5-for-5 from the field on his way to 12 points, while pulling down 12 rebounds, with Mack coming off the bench for 10 points.
Cerritos vs. Mt. San Antonio: On his way to earning the Most Valuable Player of the Mountie Classic, Thomas finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots, while Mack added 15 points and five rebounds and was named All-Tournament. The Falcons opened a 33-23 lead at halftime and held off the Mounties to record the win. As a team, Cerritos converted 18-of-23 free throws, with Thomas and Hamilton (nine points) combining to go 11-for-11, with Carter and Guzman each pulling down seven rebounds.
