Entering their regular season finale with the South Coast Conference South Division clinched, the Cerritos College men's basketball team was defeated by rival Long Beach City College, 75-69. The loss by the Falcons (24-5, 9-1) also ended the team's 10-game winning streak, tying their longest since the 2001-02 season. They will find out where they're seeded among the 20 teams that advance to the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Monday, with the first 12 seeds receiving a bye in the first round.
In a game that went back and forth the entire night, Cerritos held a 52-44 lead with 12:27 left in the game after a Jonathan Guzman (Paramount HS) jump shot. But the Vikings were able to tie the game at 55-55 with 6:35 left on the clock after going on an 11-3 run which saw the Falcons hit a cold spell from the field. During that span, Cerritos went 0-for-6 from the field with six turnovers. They regained the lead at 59-58 on a pair of Jason Carter (View Park HS/Santa Monica College) free throws with 5:12 remaining in the second half.
Guzman scored the team's next six points as the two squads traded baskets for the next three minutes. With 2:02 left, the Vikings William English converted a three-point play for a 69-66 LBCC advantage, and after sophomore Demetrius Thomas (Bassick, CT HS/Porterville College) missed a jumper, Artis Parris converted one of two free throws for Long Beach City for a 70-66 lead. It became a five-point game-72-67 with 1:01 remaining when Parris made good on both free throws.
Coming down the court on their next possession, freshman Christian Alvis (Whittier Christian HS) missed a three-pointer and after a Vikings turnover, Thomas was off on his jumper with :30 seconds left. Needing to foul, the Falcons saw Parris and Matthew Wooten net one of two free throws each to close out the scoring in the game.
Guzman led the team with 20 points off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting, along with seven rebounds, while Thomas accounted for 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Carter posted 10 points and a team-high five assists, while sophomore Riley Hamilton (Rancho Verde HS) produced nine points. As a team, the Falcons shot just 39% from the field, their lowest in the last 19 games.
