For the second game in a row, the Cerritos College men's basketball team used a late shot to come away victorious. On Friday at Cypress College, sophomore Darron Henry (Long Beach Poly HS) banked in a shot from just across halfcourt to give the Falcons a 57-55 win over the Chargers. Next up for the Falcons (4-2), they will be hosting Allan Hancock College at 5:00 p.m. next Wednesday.
Trailing 55-50 with 2:21 remaining in the second half, the Falcons saw the Chargers go 0-for-3 from the field and 0-for-6 from the free throw line the remainder of the game. Cerritos didn't help their cause too much, as they missed two free throws with 18 seconds left that would have put them in front 56-55.
On the sixth straight missed free throw, sophomore Jordun Willard (Paramount HS) pulled down the rebound and got the ball to Henry, who dribbled three times before launching the game-winning shot at the buzzer.
Down 55-54 in the final seconds, the Chargers missed a pair of free throws that could have sealed the game. After the second miss, the Falcons looked to sophomore Andrew Mata (Schurr HS/Holy Cross, IN College) at the top of the key for a three-pointer. But Willard was able to come up with the offensive rebound with 5.5 seconds left and was fouled. He missed both of his free throws, and was called for a lane violation on his second attempt.
That looked to be the end for Cerritos until Cypress, who went 15-of-24 from the free throw line, continued to miss chances to extend their slim lead.
Henry led the team with 17 points, while adding three rebounds and three assists, while freshman Blake Brewer (Orange Lutheran HS) produced 14 points and six rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Marcel Hayes (Long Beach Poly HS) also played well off the bench and finished with eight points and five rebounds, while Willard concluded the game with five points and six rebounds.
