M. Basketball: Falcons maintain top billing with win over El Camino

The Cerritos College men's basketball team maintained first place in the South Coast Conference South Division after their 121-93 win over host El Camino College on Wednesday. The Falcons (14-7, 4-0) have now won four in a row and will travel to rival Long Beach City College for a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday. The 121 points by the Falcons were the most since a 129-125 win in overtime over the Warriors in on February 17, 2017.

It was just a seven-point game (62-55) with 13:05 remaining in the second half until Cerritos started scoring points in bunches. The advantage swelled to 89-64 5:04 later, with help from a pair of Andrew Mata (Schurr HS/Holy Cross, IN College) three-pointers, as well as a long distance basket from Blake Brewer (Orange Lutheran HS). During that time, El Camino was just 2-for-6 with their other five points coming from three throws.

The Falcons held a slim 47-43 lead at intermission and it wasn't until the final 13 minutes that the team started to pull away.

The 28-point win allowed the entire bench to see action, as six players scored in double-figures for Cerritos. Freshman Elijah Andrews (Wellington, FL HS) came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points, along with six assists, to lead the way, while freshman Jaysen Owens (Narbonne HS) added 11 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in his 23 minutes off the bench. Also producing in a non-starting role was sophomore Marcel Hayes (Long Beach Poly HS), who finished with 10 points and three caroms.

Sophomore Dillon Botts (Mayfair HS) accounted for 14 points and four assists, with Brewer and sophomore Spencer Ezewiro (Paramount HS/Moberly Area, MO CC) each finishing with 12 points, and also had 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Falcons. Mata hit a trio of three-pointers to account for his nine points, with freshman Brian DeMedio (Warren HS) also recording nine points, with five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

As a team, the Falcons shot 57% from the field (49-for-86) and outrebounded the Warriors, 59-36.
