With a roster primarily consisting of freshmen, the Cerritos College men's tennis team opened the season with a convincing 9-0 non-conference win over Victor Valley on Tuesday. The Falcons (1-0) swept all of the singles and doubles matches, with the bottom of the ladder surrendering only two games. The team will now travel to Irvine Valley for a 2:00 p.m. match on Thursday.

Leading the way at the top of the singles ladder was freshman Nathan Eshmade (King's Baptist, Australia HS), who posted a 6-0, 6-2 win, while sophomore Todd Jenkins (Cabrillo HS) moved nicely into the #2 position and registered a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Freshman Matthew Espiritu (Long Beach Millikan HS) defeated Michael Garcia, 6-4, 6-4 in the third position.

At the bottom of the ladder, the trio of freshmen Maurice Grijalva (Gardena HS) and Julian Avila (Paramount HS), along with sophomore Kevin Wall (Lakewood HS) combined to surrender just two games in sweeping the singles play and clinching the match.

With the win already in hand, the Falcons top doubles team of Esmande and Espiritu took the rest of the day off, with Jenkins and Grijalva moving up to the top spot and posted an 8-1 win. Freshman Gianni Jeong (Cerritos HS) teamed with Avila for an 8-4 win, while Wall paired up with freshman Danny Cho (Kennedy HS) for an 8-0 victory.
