M. Tennis: Doubles team and two singles advance to quarterfinals

At the conclusion of the second day of the CCCAA Men's Tennis State Championships, Cerritos College has one doubles team and two singles players still alive. The third day of the four-day event gets underway in Ojai on Saturday.

In singles play, freshman Arthur Toledo (Goliath Academy, FL), who's seeded #3 from Southern California, will take on #6-seeded Leszek Mirecki of Irvine Valley College in the quarterfinals. On Friday, Toledo eliminated Kyle Spiegelman of Ventura College, 6-0, 6-3 and then advanced to the next round when Manfred Vogt of College of the Desert had to default out due to an injury.

Toledo and doubles partner, sophomore Bruno Duarte (Centro Educacional Rogêdo, Brazil) are just three wins away from the state championship after winning a pair of matches on Friday. They opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Thiago Manzano and Rodrigo Onate of Fullerton College and then dispatched #12-seeded Ameer Hossain and Saar Rogovski of College of the Desert, 6-2, 6-1. The pair will square off against #2-seeded Stephen Guenard and Sam Hall of American River College. The Falcon duo defeated them, 8-2 in a team dual match earlier in the season.

Recording a win over Rodrigo Souza of Irvine Valley College, 6-2, 7-6(3) in his first match of the day, sophomore Jan Simon (Gymnasium Auf Der Karthause, Germany/Cypress College) upset #7-seeded Miles Clark of Riverside City College, 2-6, 6-1, 1-1 (injury default) in his next match. The #15-seeded Simon will take on #2-seeded Alex Kuperstein of College of the Desert in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning.

Suffering defeats on the day were #4-seeded Duarte, who was upset by unseeded Ardi Safi, 7-5, 2-6, 6-7(0) in the Round of 32, with freshman #16-seeded Lucas Legrand (Marie, France) posting a win in the morning and then was eliminated in the Round of 16 by #9-seeded Julian Lafond of Irvine Valley College, 0-6, 5-7. In doubles action, #6-seeded Legrand and Simon were ousted in the Round of 16 by #1-seeded Nicholas Khamphilath and Ryo Kojima of Foothill College, 3-6, 6-4, 3-10.
