Heading into the championship round of the CCCAA State Championships at Fresno City College on Saturday, the Cerritos College wrestling team was sitting in third place. The Falcons held an eight point lead over fourth place Palomar College and had four individuals competing for state championships. All Cerritos had to do was win one of the four to secure third place, while the Comets had to win both of their finals and hope that the Falcons lost all four. The Falcons won two individual championships, which gave them 116 team points, while Palomar ended with 106.5 points. Sacramento City College won the championship with 158 points, while the host Rams came in second place with 137 points.

133 Pounds - Freshman Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS) was ranked #2 in the state and went up against #1-ranked Jonas Gayton of Fresno City. He fell behind 2-0 in the first period and was up against a 1:04 deficit in riding time against Gayton. A quick escape and a late takedown by Gayton gave him a 5-0 lead with just 2:00 minutes left in the match. Vargas was down 8-0 in the third period and got on the board with an escape with :35 seconds left in the match for his only point.

Aaron Negrete won the state title at 157 pounds 157 Pounds - Competing with an injured knee that he suffered in the semifinals, freshman Aaron Negrete (Calvary Chapel HS) was able to overcome the pain. Ranked #2 in the state, Negrete took a 2-1 lead in the first period against Jose Regama of Mt. San Antonio College. A penalty point called against Regama, followed by an escape and takedown for Negrete (pictured, left) gave him a 6-1 lead after two period. Negrete, who defeated Regama in the Southern California championship match the week before, capped off his championship with a late takedown and four-point near fall for a 12-2 win.

Oscar Martinez won the 197-pound state championship 197 Pounds - Ranked #1 in the state for the majority of the season, sophomore Oscar Martinez (Corona Centennial HS) made a return trip to the championship match. He squared off against Luke Brewer of Modesto College, who had a very sizeable reach advantage. But Martinez (pictured, right) was able to get the most of the long and lanky Brewer and recorded takedowns in both the first and second period. He used his strength when on top and eventually got Brewer on his back to record a pin in 6:50, or with just :10 seconds left in the match.

285 Pounds -  Sophomore Jesse Gomez (Buena Park HS) was looking to become the second straight Falcon heavyweight to go undefeated and win a state title. Ranked #1 in the state, Gomez had a difficult time dealing with Palomar College's Seville Hayes, who was ranked #4 in the state. Gomez was taken down in the first period, but quickly escaped. Both wrestlers collected escape points in the next two periods. With time running out, and trailing 3-2, Gomez was able to snap on Hayes, but could not get him to the ground and then saw his last attempt come up short when they both went out of bounds after Gomez had control.
