The Cerritos College wrestling team is looking to maintain third place at the CCCAA State Championships in Fresno with just the championship matches to be held. The Falcons, defending state champions, have 105 team points and four wrestlers in individual state championship matches. Their closest competition is from Palomar College, who has 97 points, and only two competitors in championship matches. Cerritos is 23 points behind second place Fresno City, while Sacramento City College all but has the team title locked down with 154 team points.

125 Pounds - Entering the day, sophomore Estevan Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS) was two wins away from his second state championship. He won the title in 2010 and was out of wrestling until this season. In the semifinals, Cabanas was defeated by Julian Gayton of Fresno City, 8-4, with his best medal possible being third place. He regrouped and pinned Christian Vasquez of Modesto College in 59 seconds and then suffered an 18-12 loss at the hands of Fresno City's Adrian Campusano to finish in fourth place and earned All-America honors.

133 Pounds - Freshman Anthony Vargas (Citrus Hill HS) was leading Isaac Pilgrim of Sacramento City College, 3-1 in the third period of their semifinal match. Vargas broke a 1-1 tie on a takedown with 39 seconds remaining in the third period. Pilgrim was able to escape, but Vargas held him at bay for a 3-2 win. He is slated to face Jonas Gayton of Fresno City in the championship match.

149 Pounds - After opening the tournament with a loss on the first day, freshman Kody Davis (Chino Valley, AZ HS) steadily continued to win close matches. He started the day down 2-0 against Mark Taijeron of Modesto College, but came up with a two-point takedown early in the third period to tie the match. Davis was then able to maintain control for the rest of the match to earn a riding time point, which gave him a 3-2 win. In the third place match, Davis completed his comeback with a 15-5 major win over Brock Diaz of West Hills. He won four straight matches to finish in third place and earn All-America honors.

157 Pounds - Teammates Aaron Negrete (Calvary Chapel HS) and Dylan Moreno (Downey HS) squared off in a semifinal match in the morning. Leading 4-2 after the first period, Negrete suffered a twisted knee on a move by Moreno that put him behind, 6-4. However, Negrete was able to recover and broke an 8-8 tie in the third period with a takedown. He finished off the match collecting a riding time point for an 11-9 victory and berth in the state championship match. He will take on Jose Regama of Mt. San Antonio in the finals. Negrete beat Regama in the Southern California championship match last weekend. As for Moreno, he dropped into the consolation rounds and suffered losses to Landon Myers of Santa Ana (5-4) and Noor Kathem of Modesto (17-2) to finish in sixth place.

197 Pounds - Looking to get back into the championship match for the second time, sophomore Oscar Martinez (Corona Centennial HS) was in a defensive battle with Jason Zecchini of Sacramento City College in the semifinals. He broke a scoreless time with an escape point in the second period, while Zecchini returned the favor with one in the third period. Martinez finally was able to get an advantage and recorded a takedown with 53 seconds remaining. His opponent escaped for a point with 44 seconds left, but Martinez remained aggressive and held on for the win. He will look to win a title when he faces Luke Brewer of Modesto in the finals.

285 Pounds - Another Falcon who finished one win away from an individual championship last year, Jesse Gomez (Buena Park HS), remained undefeated on the season when he defeated Murrel Anderson of Chabot, 3-2 in the semifinals. He took a quick 2-0 lead in the first period, but could not keep him down, as Anderson escaped 11 seconds after the scoring move. Gomez went up 3-1 with an escape in the second period and Anderson collected his own escape point in the third. The score would end that way, which also snapped Gomez's four straight wins by pin. He will take on Seville Hayes of Palomar in the finals.
