W. Swimming: Relay teams lead the way at Golden West

Led by five of their relay teams, the Cerritos College women's swimming team finished with 105 team points, which put them in seventh place at the Golden West Invitational on Friday. The Falcons will host their South Coast Conference opener on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Mt. San Antonio College and El Camino College.

The day started with the 200-medley relay team coming in fifth place with a time of 2:12.03 and consisted of Carolina Medrano (Schurr HS), Jahvani Shah (Cerritos HS), Joanna Porras (Warren HS) and Lizbeth Ramirez (Sunny Hills HS). The same quartet got together to swim the 400-yard medley relay and posted a sixth place time of 5:05.32. Medrano (backstroke) and Shah (breaststroke) competed in the same events, with Porras switching from the butterfly to the freestyle in the longer race, while Ramirez competed in the butterfly for the 400-yard medley relay.

The best relay performance came from the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Karol Martinez (Warren HS), Medrano, Ramirez and Porras, who placed third with a time of 9:25.24, while the same four swimmers checked in with a time of 1:55.47 in the 200-yard freestyle relay to come in fifth place. In the final event of the day, the foursome posted a sixth place time in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:21.93.

In individual races, Ramirez came in second place in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 29.79, which was just off the winning pace of 28.89 by Carli Willis of Grossmont College. Ramirez also posted a sixth place time of 1:01.17 in the 100-yard freestyle, with Medrano coming in seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (6:14.95) and ninth in the 200-yard IM (2:40.49).
