The Cerritos College women's tennis team opened the season on Tuesday with a convincing 9-0 win over host Glendale College. The Falcons (1-0), who play their first six matches of the season on the road, will travel to Santa Monica College on Thursday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match.
Opening with singles, Cerritos was able to lock down the team win with six straight wins by straight sets. With only two returning players in the lineup, the Falcons showed the depth of their incoming players, as last year's #1 player, Petra Such (Illyes Gyula, Hungary), competed in the #2 singles position. As for last year's #2, Diviana Bravo (Rosa de Jesus Cordero, Ecuador), played at #5, and came away with a solid 6-2, 6-4 victory. Sophomore Lisa Suzuki (Fujimigaoka, Japan/Seward Country (KS) CC) assumed the #1 spot on the ladder, and came away with a convincing, 6-2, 6-0 win, with Such registering a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Freshman Moa Lindstrom (Dragonskolans Elitidrottgymnasium, Sweden) wasted little time in recording a 6-2, 6-0 win in the #3 spot on the ladder, with freshman Kseniia Prokopchuk (School 45, Ukraine) dropping just one game in her 6-0, 6-1 victory. The first completed match of the day came at #6, where sophomore Itzi Torres (ITESM CEM, Mexico/Kansas Wesleyan University) lost one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The day continued with the Falcons winning two of the three doubles matches that took place, as the Vaqueros defaulted in the #3 match. Suzuki and Prokopchuk teamed for an 8-3 win, while Suck and Lindstrom recorded an 8-5 victory to complete the sweep.
