W. Tennis: All players advance on first day of tournament

At the conclusion of the first day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College women's tennis team has advanced all of their singles players and all three doubles teams. A day before, the Falcons captured the CCCAA Team Dual State Championship for the second time in three years, and will send their players into the Round of 32 on Friday morning in and around the city of Ojai.

Sophomore Lisa Suzuki (Fujimigaoka, Japan/Seward County (KS) CC), who's seeded #2 for the tournament, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pia Valtierra of Santa Barbara City College and will now face unseeded Taylor Johnson of Mt. San Jacinto College on Friday morning. Her doubles partner, freshman Kseniia Prokopchuk (School 45, Ukraine), a #6 seed, polished off Josah Carpuz of San Diego City College, 6-0, 6-0, which advances her to the next round where she will face #6-seeded Maria Zimmerman of De Anza College. Zimmerman is the #2 singles player for the Gladiators, while Prokopchuk plays at #3 for the Falcons. Teaming together in their lone doubles match, the #1 seeds shut out Angelica Battur and Sharon Cahill of Chabot College, 6-0, 6-0. The two will now face #16-seeded Milly Amico and Mary Beth Carter of Fresno City College.

Five of the six Falcons singles players are seeded, and #5-seed Petra Such (Illyes Gyula, Hungary) opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Presli Pilati of Modesto College. On Friday, she will face #12-seeded Angelica Frank of Folsom Lake College in the Round of 32. Freshman Moa Lindstrom (Dragonskolans Elitidrottgymnasium, Sweden), who is seeded #11, posted a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mary DiMaggio of Shasta College in her first match, and will now take on #4-seeded Stephanie Huang of Chabot College on Friday morning. Huang is the #1 singles player for the Gladiators, while Lindstrom plays at #4 for Cerritos. Such and Lindstrom, who are seeded #5 for doubles, posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Shannon Beaver and Ashley Garcia of Cypress College in their first match. Tomorrow afternoon will see them take on #13-seeded Zee Aynaci and Abigail Campos of Fresno City College.

Seeded #12 for the singles tournament, sophomore Itzi Torres (ITESM CEM, Mexico/Kansas Wesleyan University) defeated Grossmont College's Katrina Jasso, 6-0, 6-1 and will now go up against unseeded JoAnn Taylor of Orange Coast College, who is their #3 singles player. Her doubles partner, sophomore Diviana Bravo (Rosa de Jesus Cordero, Ecuador), upended #14-seeded Ana Schneider of Foothill College, 6-1, 6-3 and will now face #3-seeded Miri Inoue of Orange Coast, who is their #1 singles player. Bravo plays at #6 for the Falcons, while Torres is the #5 player on the singles ladder. In their lone doubles match on Thursday, the #11-seeded pair eliminated Julie O'Keefe and Sandy Yang of Santa Rosa Junior College. They will take on another Santa Rosa pair, Josephine Pulver and Pia Valtierra, in the Round of 32.
