A three-run eighth inning gave the Cerritos College baseball team a 7-5 lead against College of the Canyons on Wednesday. However, the Cougars (6-4) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to send the game to extra innings, where they scored again and posted an 8-7 decision. It marked the third one-run loss of the season. The Falcons (4-8) return to Kincaid Field on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. game against Santa Barbara City College.

In the top of the eighth inning, freshman first baseman Jesus Mercado (St. John Bosco HS) reached base on an error and took second base on a wild throw. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Mercado was driven in on a base hit by freshman third baseman Jorge Rodriguez (Bellflower HS). Freshman catcher Adam Rubio (Montebello HS) beat out an infield single, and when the ball got away, both runners advanced a base. Freshman outfielder Micah Hee (Kamehameha, HI HS) successfully laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to drive in the second run, with sophomore second baseman Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS) reaching on the third error of the inning, which brought home the third run.

Freshman Jakob Johnston (California HS) came on in relief of freshman relief pitcher Joe Pacheco (Redlands East Valley HS) and was greeted by a solo home run from Wes Felber. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Johnston allowed a two-out single and stolen base to Chris May, with Calvin Estrada tying the game with a base hit. Johnston, who took the loss, allowed a leadoff single and a wild pitch to put the winning run on second base. After an out was recorded, sophomore Mitchell Peak (Goodpasture Christian School, TN HS) came in and allowed a walk and game-winning hit to Anthony Medina.

On the day, Rubio led the team with a 3-for-5 day and two runs scored, while Edwards clubbed his second home run of the season while going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two walks. Freshman shortstop Ramon Bramasco (Cathedral HS) drew three walks and drove in a run in the loss.
