Tied with Long Beach City College heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cerritos College baseball team committed a throwing error, which allowed the winning run to score in a 4-3 setback. The loss was the seventh in a row for the Falcons, who fell to 8-19 on the season and 3-8 in South Coast Conference South Division play. They will take on the Vikings at Kincaid Field at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Freshman pitcher Joe Pacheco (Redlands East Valley HS) came on in relief of freshman Micah Hee (Kamehameha, HI HS), who opened the inning by walking Tyler Wilber. Pacheco hit Jared Mayeda and then walked Chase Ambrose to load the bases. With one out, Pacheco got Zach Martinez to ground the ball to freshman third baseman Jorge Rodriguez (Bellflower HS). However, his throw was off line to first base, which allowed the winning run to score.
The Falcons fought back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman shortstop Ramon Bramasco (Cathedral HS) drew a lead-off walk before sophomore second baseman Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS) reached base on an error. After freshman outfielder Rolando Nichols (Serra HS) advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, freshman first baseman Jesus Mercado (St. John Bosco HS) was intentioanlly walked with two outs. Freshman outfielder Nick Penzetta (Kamehameha, HI HS) followed with a two-run single up the middle, which plated a pair of runs to tie the game.
Then, in the top of the eighth inning, Cerritos tied the game once again at 3-3 when freshman pinch-hitter Dominic Bravo (Warren HS) hit a solo home run.
On the day, the Falcons had 10 hits, but left 13 runners on base. Mercado went 3-for-4 with a walk, while Penzetta and Bramasco each had a pair of hits in the loss.
