Baseball: Trip ends with 8-1 win over Hancock

The Cerritos College baseball team closed out their three-day road trip at the Cuesta/Hancock Spring Break Tournament with an 8-1 win over Allan Hancock College. The Falcons (12-23) resume South Coast Conference South Division play with a 2:30 p.m. game at Los Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday.

Freshman starting pitcher Gilbert Romero (Alhambra HS) allowed a single and two walks in the first inning against the Bulldogs, but struck out Chris Taitague looking to end the inning. He retired the next 10 straight until an error opened the door for Hancock's lone run of the game in the fifth inning. Romero (4-4) earned the win with seven innings of work and allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and struck out five. Freshman Carlos Valle (Bell Gardens HS) came on in relief and tossed the final two innings.

Offensively, the Falcons scored in the first inning when sophomore second baseman Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS) singled home freshman outfielder Nick Penzetta (Kamehameha, HI HS), who started the game with a leadoff triple. They added four runs in the top of the sixth inning, with the big hit being a bases loaded triple by freshman third baseman Jorge Rodriguez (Bellflower HS), which broke a 1-1 tie.

The big hit was set by by one-out singles from freshman shortstop Ramon Bramasco (Cathedral HS) and Edwards, while freshman outfielder Rolando Nichols (Serra HS) drew a two-out walk. Rodriguez was then brought in on a base hit by freshman outfielder Dominic Bravo (Warren HS).

Rodriguez finished the game with four RBI, with Bramasco and Edwards (two RBI) leading the team with three hits each.
