W. Track & Field: Several runners compete at Occidental Invitational

Several members of the Cerritos College women's track and field team took part in the Occidental Invitational on Friday. The remainder of the Falcons will now compete in the UC Irvine Four-Way Meet with three Division I schools on Saturday.

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Patricia Hurley (Mark Keppel HS) turned in the fourth fastest time in school history when she crossed the finish line in 11:39.01. Her time also put her in ninth place overall and was defeated by only one community college runner.

The 800 meters saw freshman Maddy Focht (Long Beach Poly HS) come in 43rd overall with a time of 2:31.41, while a trio of runners took part in the 1500 meters. Freshman Janet Salazar (Paramount HS) led the way with a 42nd place time of 5:18.15, with sophomore Kathia Avila (Cerritos HS) not far behind in 45th place with a time of 5:19.85. The third Falcon runner to finish the race was freshman Tiffany Hernandez, whose time of 5:25.89 put her in 50th place.

In the 10,000 meters, which was run with both men and women, sophomore Karina Sanchez (Warren HS) was 10th with a time of 39:05.83, while freshman Stephanie Ruiz (Western HS) was the 17th place women's runner in 40:49.26.
