W. Track & Field: Cerritos holds down first place after conference prelims

Five events into the South Coast Conference Prelims and the Cerritos College women's track and field team leads the way with 75 team points. Of those five events, the Falcons won three of them, while they finished in second in two of those. The championships will take place on Saturday at Cerritos College.

Sophomore thrower Angelina Escobar (Bell Gardens HS) earned 18 of the team's points, as she won the javelin and finished second in the hammer. Her distance in the javelin of 34.05 edged out the rest of the competition, including sophomore teammate Andrea Villalta (Norwalk HS), who placed third with a distance of 32.05 meters. The hammer was won by sophomore Faitalia Ah-Fook (Warren HS) with a best throw of 46.25 meters, while Escobar finished second at 43.03 meters. The Falcons took the top three sports, as freshman Milika Burdett (Cypress HS) registered a distance of 42.67 meters. As a team, Cerritos earned 29 points in the event with Cynthia Lezama (El Rancho HS) coming in fifth at 37.24 meters and Dimitra Vitogiannis (Downey HS) earning a team point with her eighth place distance of 34.59 meters.

The long jump saw sophomore Jazzmine Davis (El Camino Real Charter HS) come in first place with a distance of 5.85 meters, while sophomore teammate Rionna Wallace (Lakewood HS) was a close second place at 5.66 meters. Cerritos had four of the top eight scoring finishers, with sophomore Jourdan Murphy (Carson HS) finish sixth with a leap of 5.39 meters and freshman Jada Hart (Carson HS) coming in eighth place at 5.10 meters.

Wallace also made an impact in the running prelims, as she turned in the second fastest time in the 100 meters in the state this season. Her clocking of 11.68 also moved her into the college's top five list. Also running in the race were freshman Kimora Rogers (Katella HS), who came in second place at 11.80 and sophomore Aryianna Faircloth (Magnolia HS) with a clocking of 11.93. Wallace (24.58), Faircloth (24.68) and Rogers (24.93) finished in second through fourth places in the 200 meters, while freshman Elena Mack (El Camino Real Charter HS) finished in sixth place at 25.34.

Mack also won the 400 meters in a time of 57.78, while Sophie Lopez (Fountain Valley HS) recorded an 800-meter time of 2:19.02 to finish in second place. In the 400-meter IH, Davis recorded a third place time of 1:07.01, while the Falcons also earned five team points when Hart took fifth place in the pole vault and 2.50 meters.
