M. Basketball: Falcons win second tournament of the year

For the second time this season, the Cerritos College men's basketball team has captured a tournament championship. Over the weekend, the Falcons (8-2) defeated three teams to win the Mt. San Antonio Tournament, adding that to the Irvine Valley Tournament they won last month. The team opened with an 88-71 win over Orange Coast College and followed that with a 75-69 victory over Fresno City College. In the championship game, Cerritos handed the host Mounties a 79-67 setback. The Falcons will host Allan Hancock College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 10.

Cerritos vs. Orange Coast: A consistent effort by the Falcons propelled them to a 47-34 advantage at halftime, and they went on to post the first of two double-digit victories over the weekend. Sophomore Brian Nebo (St. John Bosco HS) led the team with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and he netted 8-of-10 free throw attempts. The bench received a boost from freshman forward Dezmon Murphy (La Mirada HS), who was good on 10-of-13 free throws on his way to 18 points, while sophomore Salvador Carlos (Downey HS/Biola University) accounted for 14 points, with four three-pointers, in the win. Sophomore Cristian Perez (Santa Fe HS) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go with his seven points, with Nebo and sophomore Anthony Lefeau (Orange Lutheran HS) both pulling down six boards.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: In a battle against the Rams, the Falcons received 59 of their points from their starting lineup. Perez (7-for-9 FG) led the way with 16 points, with Nebo posting a double-double after his 15-point, 10-rebound performance. Freshman Jonathan Guzman (Paramount HS) finished with 12 points and five rebounds, with Murphy adding eight points off the bench. Carlos (nine points, three steals) and sophomore guard Tyler Payne (La Mirada HS), who had seven points and five assists, also played well in the win.

Cerritos vs. Mt. San Antonio: Nebo capped off his tournament Most Valuable Player performance by scoring a game-high 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting and also pulled down five rebounds. Perez went for 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while the duo of Murphy and freshman Malik Smith (Gahr HS) each added 10 points off the bench. Murphy converted all eight of his free throws, while the Falcons were 26-for-31 from the charity stripe. Carlos, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with five points and three rebounds, as did Payne and Lefeau.
