Just a few short minutes away from winning their seventh straight games, the Cerritos College men's soccer team allowed a penalty kick in the 88th minute against host East Los Angeles College and had to settle for a 1-1 tie. The South Coast Conference draw did extend their unbeaten steak to seven in a row (6-0-1), as the Falcons are now 6-3-2 on the year and 0-0-1 in conference play. The team will host #1-ranked El Camino College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
Scoreless through the first half and looking to go into intermission, Cerritos was able to get on the board before the final whistle. In extra time, freshman Miguel Gonzalez picked up his third goal of the season to send the Falcons into halftime on top, 1-0.
The Falcons peppered the Huskies defense the majority of the game and outshot their opponents, 19-4 in the match. Freshman Donavan Perez (South East HS) led the team with four shots in the game, while freshman Jose Lopez (MY Academy HS) added three shot attempts.
It looked as though Cerritos was about to come away with the shutout victory, until they were called for a foul in the 18-yard box. That call allowed the Huskies to take a penalty kick and Johan Elias was able to convert his shot past goalkeeper Juan Pablo Camacho (Norwalk HS), which tied the game.
"It was a very tough was to end the game," stated head coach Benny Artiaga. "We completely dominated the entire game, only to give it away with a casual penalty kick in the 89th minute. Our boys need to learn to put teams away and not play so casually in the final third of the game."
