M. Swimming: Falcons open season at Waterman Festival

Competing at Palomar College in the Waterman Festival, the Cerritos College men's swimming team recorded 62 team points on Friday. The Falcons, who will swim in the Palomar Pentathlon on Saturday, turned in several strong times on the day.

Led by sophomore Jason Ly (Villa Park HS), who scored in three of the five events, accounted for 43 of the team's points, while sophomore Jesus Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) scored in two of the events. The best result of the day came in the 50-yard backstroke, where Ly came in third place with a time of 26.67, which earned 16 team points. Ly was barely bested out of the second place time of 26.20, which was turned in by Arnaud Magnan of Riverside City College.

Ly also came in fourth place in the 100-yard IM with a time of 58.51, while Rojas was clocked in 1:01.12 to place 11th overall. Once again, Mangan of Riverside City finished ahead of Ly, as he took third place in a time of 57.67. Sophomore Isiah Gaytan (Whittier HS) posted a 25th place time of 1:02.83.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Ly earned seventh place with a time of 23.11, while his time of 25.88 put him in 20th place in the 50-yard butterfly. Rojas earned six team points with his 50-yard  butterfly time of 25.33, which put him in 11th place. It was freshman Nigel Rueda (Schurr HS) who led the Falcons in the 50-yard breaststroke, and collected seven team points with his 10th place time of 31.44. Ly came in 20th place in a time of 32.79.
