M. Track & Field: Falcons slip down to 13th place

The Cerritos College men's track and field team entered the Southern California Prelims with hopes of placing in the top five at the California Community College Athletic Association championships. Two weeks later, the Falcons concluded their season in 13th place with 21 team points after their season ended at San Mateo College on Saturday. Of the teams that finished ahead of Cerritos, only one came from the South Coast Conference, as Mt. San Antonio College finished in second place with 60 team points.

Sophomore distance runner Munir Kahssay (Western HS), who finished second at the state championships in the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters last year, was saddled with back spasms, which dropped him to 11th place in the 10,000 meters and kept him from running in the 5000 meters. Freshman Omar Torres (Warren HS) did turn in a sixth place time in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:25.82.

The best finish for a Falcon at the state championships came from freshman high jumper Adam Aguirre (Cantwell HS), who placed second with a clearance of 2.03 meters. Sophomore DeShaunte Lewis (Long Beach Poly HS) posted a time of 3:59.27 to earn a fourth place in the 1500 meters, with freshman Jonathan Bazinet (California HS) slipped all the way down to 11th place in 4:07.24, which was :13 seconds off his personal best time.

Triple jumper Ricky Carrigan, Jr. (Cabrillo HS) concluded his season by finishing in eighth place with a distance of 14.37 meters, with sophomore Brandon Taylor (Mayfair HS) posting a 10th place in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a clocking of 9:48.32, which was :10 seconds off his best time of the season.

Freshman decathlete Aaron Martin (Carson HS) compiled 5455 points to come in 11th place, with his best event coming in the 1500 meters. Martin won the event with a time of 4:52.39, which earned him 604 points.
