Cerritos College sophomore Zach Munoz (La Mirada HS/Cal State Fullerton) finished in third place at the Southern California Decathlon Championships, which were held at Falcon Stadium. During the two-day, 10-event decathlon, Munoz compiled 5998 total points, which was 300 points ahead of his closest competitor and 266 points behind overall champion Elisha Edwards of Moorpark College. With his third place finish, Munoz qualifies for the CCCAA State Championships, which will take place May 19-20 at American River College.
Through the first five events, which took place on Tuesday, Munoz sat in third place and was 255 points off Edwards first place lead. Munoz actually scored more points than Edwards in four of the five events on Wednesday, but could not make up the deficit after the first day and the 140-point advantage for Edwards in the 110-meter hurdles, the first event of the second day.
Of the 10 entries in the decathlon, Munoz posted the best results in the long jump (6.32 meters; 657 points), while he recorded the second most points in the discus (31.64 meters; 497), javelin (44.46 meters; 507) and tied for second in the shot put (11.02 meters; 547). He also posted the third best high jump at 1.76 meters, which netted him 593 points.
