After the first day of the Southern California Decathlon Championships, Cerritos College sophomore Timothy Sloan (Central, VA HS/Mt. San Antonio College) was sitting in first place. Through the first five events, Sloan held a slim first place lead with 3294 points, but fell off the leaderboard on the second day and finished in 10th place with 5027 points. Sloan was disqualified in the final event of the day, the 1500 meters when he stepped over the lane on the curve, and did not earn any points. If he was able to match his time of 5:15.91 that he ran at the UNLV Invitational, it would have earned him approximately 450 points and propelled him to fifth place overall.

Sophomore teammate Eugene Leduc (California HS) concluded the 10-event championships in eighth place with 5228 points, with freshman Venture O'Neal (West Torrance HS) placing 12th with 4699 points.

Consistent on the first day, Sloan amassed 3294 points to hold a 57-point lead over Joshua Godfrey of Southwestern College. He concluded the first day with a fifth place finish in the 400 meters in a time of 53.61, which earned him 656 points. In the previous event, Sloan led the other 12 competitors in the high jump with a height of 1.91 meters (6' 3 1/4"), which netted him 723 points. 

Sloan was still leading after the first event of the second day, the 110-meter HH with a time of 16.68 (658 points), but saw San Diego Mesa College's Aaron Mickelson move into second place with his 766-point time of 15.71. With four events remaining, Sloan led with 3952 points, with Mickelson on his heels with 3852 points. The lead was gone after the discus when Sloan recorded a distance of 23.37 meters (76' 8") for 336 points, with Mickelson taking the lead. He struggled in the next two events and saw Andrew Aguilar of Mt. San Antonio College take over the lead and win the championship.

Leduc performed well in the 400 meters and recorded the fourth fastest time at 53.35 (667 points) and also ran the third best 1500 meters with a clocking of 4:47.22, which earned him 636 points. As for O'Neal, his best event was the shot put, where his distance of 11.02 meters (36' 2") earned him 547 points and was the best distance in the championships.
