It was a second place team finish for the Cerritos College men's cross country team at the Coach Downey Classic in San Diego on Friday. The Falcons finished with 66 team points, which included two of the top 10 finishers on the day. The team will travel back down to San Diego next Friday for the San Diego Mesa Invitational, which will take place at NTC Park at Liberty Station.
The first Cerritos runner to complete the four-mile course on Friday was Jose Garcia Chavez (Norwalk HS), who tried to keep up with a pair of San Diego Mesa College runners to earn a top five finish. His time of 22:11.8 put him in seventh place out of 57 total runners on the day. It was more than a minute later before the next Cerritos runner would cross the finish line, as Jeff Chmiel (Lakewood HS) recorded a time of 23:26.0, still good for 10th place overall.
Staying fairly close to each other, Rogelio Garcia (Salesian HS) saw his time of 24:10.7 earn him a 16th place finish, with teammate Aiden House-Ortiz (Lakewood HS) posting the 19th place time of 24:32.2. The final Falcons runner to complete the team scoring was Colby Owens (Milford Mill Academy, MD HS), who was clocked in 25:58.1, which put him in 28th place on the day.
Also competing for the Falcons were Daniel Gomez (Santa Fe HS; 26:05.1; 31st place), Jose Ortiz (Norwalk HS; 26:54.2; 36th place) and Angel Serrano (South Gate HS; 27:42.2; 42nd place).
