As the lone Cerritos College representative at the CCCAA State Championships in Fresno on Saturday, freshman Jose Garcia Chavez (Norwalk HS) came in 84th place out of 176 entries. Chavez, who placed 56th at the Southern California Championships to qualify for the state meet, completed the four-mile course at Woodward Park in a time of 21:58.7.
After a first mile time of 5:08.3, Garcia Chavez passed 14 runners by the second mile mark, as he was clocked in 10:40.3 and then pulled ahead of seven others by the mile three mark. By the end of the race, he was able to pull ahead of three others to settle in on his 84th place finish. Earlier in the season, Garcia Chavez registered a time of 22:34.4, which means he carved :36 seconds off his previous time.
