Concluding a five-game homestand that all took place within the week, the Cerritos College softball team took on a pair of non-conference opponents on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field. They opened with a 2-0 win over Fullerton College and followed that with a 3-0 win against Los Angeles Mission College. The team resumes South Coast Conference play on Monday with a 3:00 p.m. game against Rio Hondo College.

Cerritos vs. Fullerton: Locked in a pitching duel with the Hornets, sophomore Samantha Islas (Roosevelt HS) worked out of several situations and went on to toss a five-hit shutout that included seven strikeouts. Islas allowed a pair of hits in the second and third innings, but worked out of the situations with strikeouts. After opening the seventh inning with a strikeout, Islas walked her only two batters of the game, but recorded a pair of fly ball outs to end the game. On the offensive side, the Falcons scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Brooklyn Bedolla (Mayfair HS) led off with a single, followed by a walk to sophomore designated player Maddy Guillen (La Puente HS). Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Capps (Downey HS) was able to advance the runners, which set the table for sophomore second baseman Alyssa Sotelo (El Rancho HS), who laced a two-run double. Sotelo finished the game with a pair of doubles.

Cerritos vs. Los Angeles Mission: The pitching continued to keep opposing batters off guard, as freshman Reanna Carranza (El Rancho HS) went the first 3 2/3 innings before making way for Islas to finish up the game. Carranza surrendered a pair of hits in the third inning and when she gave up a single and double with one out in the fourth inning, she came out in favor of Islas. After a getting out of the jam in the fifth inning, Islas (8-5) battled through a first-and-third situation in the sixth inning. She induced three pop flies and then retired the final three batters in the seventh to close out the win.

In the sixth inning, freshman outfielder Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS) made a spectacular running catch for the final out of the inning and kept the Eagles off the scoreboard.

Sotello, who drove in both runs in the first game, brought in the first of the game in the second inning on a ground out. Sophomore shortstop Miranda Diaz (California HS) led off with a walk and moved to second base on a base hit from Guillen. With Capps at the plate, she grounded to shortstop Jizzel Ruiz, who threw to third base looking for the force out. But the throw was dropped by third baseman Lily Stell, which loaded the bases. Diaz then came home on the ground out by Sotello.

The Falcons added a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Macias led off with a double and came home on a single by sophomore first baseman Richere Leduc (California HS). Advancing to second on the throw to the plate, the ball was deflected away, which allowed Leduc to advance to third base. She then came home on a base hit up the middle by freshman outfielder Marley Manalo (Walnut HS).
