Softball: Falcons excel in the classroom, as well as on the field

After a season in which the Cerritos College softball team placed third at the 3C2A State Championships, eight members of the team found out they received academic recognition. The Falcons, who won 33 games on the year, the most since 2014 and 14th time they eclisped the 30-win mark, had four players on the team make the President's List with a 4.0 GPA, while four others earned their names on the Dean's List, which requires a 3.5 GPA.

Three of the four names on the President's List were sophomores, Brooklyn Bedolla (Mayfair HS), Miranda Diaz (California HS) and Maddy Guillen (La Puente HS), and were joined by freshman Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS), while on the Dean's List, sophomore Alyssa Sotelo (El Rancho HS) was joined by freshmen Natalie Basurto (Walnut HS), Jocelyn Doan (Walnut HS) and Jimena Velazquez (Fullerton HS).

On the year, Bedolla, a Nursing major, batted .315 on the season with six home runs and 31 RBI. She had a tremendous post-season, as she went 11-for-30 (.367) with three doubles, a triple, three home runs and drove in nine runs in 10 games. Macias, who's majoring in Psychology, batted .358 on the year with a team-high eight home runs and drove in 30 runs. She also shared the team lead with 17 doubles and stole 14 bases. Her power numbers when up in the playoffs, as she connected on four home runs and went 13-for-36 (.361) at the plate. Diaz, who is also majoring in Nursing, hit .322 on the season and drove in 27 runs while making some outstanding defensive plays from her shortstop position. She ended her Falcon career on an 11-game hitting streak and went 13-for-34 (.382) at the plate in the playoffs and drove in 11 runs. Gullen, who's an English major, batted .252 on the year and drove in 22 runs. From her designated player position, she drove in five runs in the postseason and drew four walks.

Those on the Dean's List included Biology major Sotelo, who was previously on the President's List and was named All-American this season. She was second on the team with a .362 batting average and clubbed 10 doubles with 30 RBI and led the team with 22 stolen bases. She had eight hits in the postseason and stole five bases while also scoring seven runs. Velazquez, who is majoring in Criminal Justice, became a solid catcher after not playing the position for several years. She hit .357 on the year with five home runs and a team-leading 34 RBI, while turning in a .988 fielding percentage and threw out 11 potential base stealers. Basurto, a Criminal Justice major, was one of the team's better pinch-runners and stole three bases in as many attempts. She also went 4-for-17 at the plate during the year and drove in five runs. As for Doan, a Sociology major, she was also a pinch-runner and was 7-for-7 in stolen bases. She hit .333 (7-for-21) and scored 13 runs on the year.
