Taking on host College of the Canyons in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Cerritos College softball team was able to split the two games, as they dropped the first game, 3-0 and responded with a 4-3 win. The Falcons (9-8) will play two more games on Monday, as they host Pasadena City College at noon in a rain make-up game and will then host East Los Angeles College in their regularly scheduled 3:00 p.m. game.
In the first game against the Cougars, the Falcons allowed single runs in the first three innings, but could not counter with any runs of their own. They had a pair of runners on base in the top of the first inning, as freshman outfielder Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS) singled and sophomore first baseman Richere Leduc (California HS) drew a walk. Two-out singles by freshman catcher Jimena Velazquez (Fullerton HS) and sophomore outfielder Alyssa Capps (Downey HS) ended up getting stranded in the second inning.
College of the Canyons scored two of their three runs with two outs against sophomore starting pitcher Samantha Islas (Roosevelt HS), while the other run was unearned.
After the third inning, the Falcons collected just two hits.
Canyons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second game, although Cerritos had four hits and left five runners on base through the first two innings. They were able to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Capps led off the inning with a bunt single and then scored on an RBI triple from sophomore second baseman Alyssa Sotelo (El Rancho HS). An infield single by Macias plated Sotelo, while a base hit from Leduc put runners at first and third. Sophomore third baseman Brooklyn Bedolla (Mayfair HS) broke the tie with an infield out that brought in Macias, who was ruled safe at home on an obstruction at the plate.
The inning stayed alive on another Canyons error, which allowed Leduc to score with the second unearned run of the inning.
Islas, who came in in relief in the sixth inning, worked out of a bases loaded jam after the Cougars pushed across an unearned run. She allowed an RBI walk, but retired the next four batters to earn the save.
