Facing the #1-seeded team in the state, the Cerritos College women's basketball team was unable to keep up with host Moorpark College in the 2nd Round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday. The Falcons (21-11), seeded #16, trailed 23-9 after the first quarter and then saw that deficit swell to 51-28 at intermission, with their season coming to an end with an 86-56 decision. Head coach Trisha Kozlowski has led her teams to the postseason in three of her four seasons, while they won opening round playoff games in each of the last two years.
Trying to defend 6-foot-2 Barbara Rangel proved to be too taxing for Cerritos, who finished the night with 19 points and 20 rebounds. Equally as difficult was stopping the hot shooting hand of Jazzy Carrasco, who drained six three-pointers on her way to a game-high 21 points, with four of those outside shots coming in the first half. Carrasco is second in the state with 122 three-pointers, and also ranks second with a 42.5 shooting percentage.
The Falcons tried to run a transition offense and had some success in the second half, with sophomore Serena Rendon (Carson HS) connecting on 5-of-7 field goals in the final 10 minutes of the game. She finished with a team-high 16 points, with twin sister Jesenia Rendon (Carson HS) adding 14 points with four rebounds and three assists.
Using their size advantage, the Raiders out-rebounded the Falcons 51-33, with Moorpark also converting 54.8% of their field goals. The starting five for the Raiders accounted for 79 of their points and 42 rebounds.
Off the bench, the Falcons received six points from both sophomore Gillian Yamasaki (South Torrance HS) and freshman Jade Johnson (City of Angels HS), while Yamasaki and freshman Sarah Hernandez (St. Paul HS) both pulled down four rebounds to share the team lead
