On a night where the Cerritos College women's basketball team connected on 13 three-pointers, the team closed out their regular season with a 62-46 win over visiting El Camino College on Friday night. The Falcons (14-14), who finished in second place in the South Coast Conference South Division, will find out on Sunday where they have been seeded for the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The first round of the playoffs takes place next Wednesday.
The tandem of sophomore Ashley Miller (Paramount HS) and freshman Damarie Saldivar (Paramount HS) combined for nine of the team's converted buckets from long range, as the team opened up a 34-20 lead through the first 20 minutes. Cerritos also played without leading scorer Bridgette McIntyre (St. Anthony HS) on the night.
The Falcons opened the game scoring the first 12 points and never trailed on the night. Miller and Saldivar got the scoring started in the game with consecutive three-pointers. El Camino was able to get as close as 18-13 in the second quarter, but Cerritos went on another run to help open their double-digit lead.
After a pair of Saldivar free throws early in the fourth quarter, the lead swelled to 47-27, while eight of the nine players got on the scoreboard.
In addition to the outside shooting success of the two guards, freshman Makayla Moore (Norwalk HS) added a trio of three-pointers to account for her nine points. Miller and Saldivar were a combined 13-of-25 from the field, with Saldivar leading the team with 21 points and six steals, along with three assists and three rebounds. Miller complimented her 19 points with two rebounds and two assists. Although she was limited to just two points, freshman Akayla Burton (El Segundo HS) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, with freshman Denise Cortez (Norwalk HS) hauling down eight rebounds.
