W. Swimming: Cerritos sweeps conference meet

The Cerritos College women's swimming team earned a pair of South Coast Conference wins on Friday. The Falcons (3-2) recorded a 139-135 win over Long Beach City College, while they defeated host Rio Hondo College, 194-46. This Friday, the team will travel to Pasadena City College to take on the Lancers and El Camino College.

Trailing by 13 points at the midway point, Cerritos was able to pull ahead with wins in three of the next four races. Freshman Amanda Loya (St. Joseph HS) started the comeback with a win in the 100-yard freestyle (58.81), while sophomore Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) followed by posting a time of 1:05.76 to win the 100-yard backstroke, with freshman Stephanie Alfaro (Gahr HS) coming in third place. Sophomore Teresa Zuniga (California HS) added a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, as she posted a time of 1:16.78.

Loya and Harvey added wins in the 50-yard butterfly (29.18) and 100-yard IM (1:09.24), respectively, with Zuniga posting a second place time in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:09.29. The Falcons secured double win heading into the final event of the day. With the victory in hand, the team's top 400-yard freestyle relay quartet stepped aside, with the second team just missing out on a win by less than a second while recording a time of 4:40.01. The squad consisted of freshmen Ashley Padilla (California HS), Melody Vechayiem (Cerritos HS), Catherine Borunda (El Rancho HS) and Jaymie Rodriguez (La Mirada HS).

Both Loya and Harvey picked up three wins on the day, with Zuniga adding two first place finishes. Harvey also won the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 30.53 and was one of eight first place winners for the Falcons. Loya also won the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.93), while Alfaro was a distant second in 1:10.48. Zuniga earned a first place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke in 35.28 to round out the winners on the day.

The 200-yard medley relay team opened the day with a close second place time of 2:03.24 and was comprised of Harvey, Zuniga, Loya and sophomore Bianca Serrano (Cerritos HS), who also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle iat 28.84 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:18.39.
