UPDATE: Moa Lindström defeated Madi Geice, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to capture the singles championship, while the tandem of Lindström and Alba Gonzalez led 3-2 in the doubles match, but were unable to hold on and suffered an 8-4 decision against El Camino's Giese and Lina Ito.
Cerritos College sophomore women's tennis player Moa Lindström (Dragonskolan Elitidrottgymnasium, Sweden) is looking to be the third player in as many years to win both the South Coast Conference Tournament singles and doubles titles. On Friday, she defeated El Camino College's Lina Ito to advance to the championship match in singles play. She and freshman teammate Alba Gonzalez (Colegio Madre Guadalupe, Venezuela) posted an 8-5 win over El Camino's Riko Tanagawa and Amanda Vitanachi in the semifinals.
The doubles match is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m., with the singles finals to start at the conclusion of doubles play.
Lindström (pictured, left) was looking to join Lisa Suzuki, who won both titles in 2018 and Petra Such, a double-winner in 2017.
Lindström will be facing upset-minded Madi Giese of El Camino in the finals. Giese, who plays #3 singles for the Warriors, defeated top-seeded teammate Tanagawa, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals. In doubles play, Lindström and Gonzalez will take on Giese and Ito, who have posted a pair of wins over the Falcon duo this season in conference play.
The top eight singles players advance to the CCCAA State Championships, with Gonzalez and freshman Yesenia Palacios (Long Beach Wilson HS) joining Lindström. In doubles action, Palacios and freshman Selene Bayardo (Long Beach Millikan HS), who lost to Giese and Ito, have also advanced.
