Volleyball: Cerritos suffers first loss of the season

After opening the season with a sweep of Santa Ana College, the Cerritos College volleyball team was defeated by another team from the Orange Empire Conference on Wednesday night. The Falcons (1-1) fell victim to host Fullerton College, 13-25, 22-25, 28-26, 14-25 in their non-conference match. The team will now host a 12-team tournament over the weekend and Cerritos will take on Victor Valley College (10:00 a.m.) and Santa Monica College (3:00 p.m.) in pool play on Friday.

In the loss, sophomore Jasmynne Roberts (Long Beach Poly HS) stood out in the match, as she recorded 20 kills, including nine in the third set when the Falcons recorded their lone win. Roberts also made back row contributions with six digs. Also making a presence at the net was sophomore Lisa Villarroel (Long Beach Millikan HS/Long Beach City College) with eight kills. The duo accounted for 28 of the team's 32 kills on the night.

Sophomore setter Michelle Barba (Downey HS) dished out 19 of those assists and tied for the team lead with eight digs, along with sophomore Sara Hickman (La Mirada HS), who had a slow night at the net. Sophomore Jasmin Mitchell (Warren HS) finished with five block assists, with freshmen Natalie Caravantes (Montebello HS) and Jasmine Peralta (Lakewood HS) combining for 13 assists and 12 digs. Caravantes also added five service aces.
