With their 14-4 win over host El Camino College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College women's water polo team clinched third place in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. The Falcons (8-15, 5-2) will compete in the Santa Barbara City College Tournament on Saturday and will then take part in the South Coast Conference Tournament, which will take place at El Camino College next Friday and Saturday.
Led by sophomore All-American Angelina Romero (Schurr HS), who scored the first two goals of the game, the Falcons kept the Warriors off the board through the first quarter. With Cerritos leading 4-2 in the second quarter, sophomore Kaya Glynn (Cerritos HS) and Romero each scored to put the team in front, 6-2 heading into intermission.
The team came out strong in the second half and shut out El Camino once again, this time posting six goals and opening a convincing 12-2 advantage. Romero and sophomore Miranda Alvarez (Schurr HS) each scored twice in the quarter, with all seven field players scoring at least one goal in the match.
Romero, who had five goals, still sits in third in the state with 82 goals, while the six assists by Alvarez moved her into second in the state with 57 helpers, while she also scored three times. Sophomore Jillian Crockett (Cerritos HS) led the defensive effort with four steals, while Alvarez and Romero each had three.
A main reason the Falcons were able to keep El Camino off the board was the play of freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Sorrells (Bell Gardens HS), who turned in 18 saves, which matched her season high. With 247 saves on the year, Sorrells is just four behind state leader Evelyn Teeter of Golden West College.
