Capping off a busy week, the Cerritos College softball team split their two games on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field. The Falcons (4-5) opened with a 4-1 win over Grossmont College and finished the day with a tough 2-1 loss at the hands of Southwestern College. The team will host Fullerton College at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.

Cerritos vs. Grossmont: Methodically adding to their run total, the Falcons scored their four runs in three different innings. They posted single runs in the third and fifth, while they pushed across two more in the bottom of the seventh, with the Griffins scoring their lone run in the seventh inning. With two outs and a runner on first base, freshman third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) singled up the middle to keep the inning alive. Freshman first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS) singled home freshman shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) with the game's first run. A pair of walks in the fifth inning set the table for freshman outfielder Brianna Spoolstra (Mayfair HS), who drove home the team's second run. They finished off the scoring in the sixth inning when sophomore second baseman Rain Vega (La Mirada HS) walked, while sophomore catcher Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS) singled. A wild pitch advanced both runners, while a base hit from Tena Spoolstra brought in the first runner, with an error on the play allowing the second run to score. Freshman pitcher Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) earned the win by allowing just one run on three hits and struck out three batters. She shut down the Griffins in the first and sisth innings after they got a pair of runners on base.

Cerritos vs. Southwestern: The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the first against the Jaguars. Tena Spoolstra singled with one out and then stole second base. A walk to Hernandez was followed by Bolinas getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brianna Spoolstra drove in the run with a base hit, but Cerritos could not cash in on the opportunity any further. Southwestern tied the game in the third inning and took the lead in the fourth inning, thanks to an unearned run. Gerdts held the Jaguars at bay in the top of the sixth inning, and got out of a bases loaded jam. Cerritos came back in the bottom of the inning to threaten. Brianna Spoolstra singled and freshman outfielder Kayla Aros (Torrance HS) drew a walk. However, the next two batters struck out to end the threat.

After the game, the Cerritos College athletic staff and Falcon players presented head coach Kodee Murray with a plaque to commemorate her school-record 503rd career win.
