On Friday, the Cerritos College softball team saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-1, 5-inning loss to Cypress College at Nancy Kelly Field. The Falcons (7-6) will now open South Coast Conference South Division play on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. when they lost Los Angeles Harbor College.

The only bright spot in the loss to the defending CCCAA State Champions was sophomore catcher Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS), who moved into a tie for the state lead in home runs when she hit her sixth of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. Her 18 RBI on the season also rank her second in the state.

The Chargers (8-0) jumped on the board early when Sydney McCollum hit a lead-off home run, which led to three runs in the top of the first inning. It was 11-0 when Lopez came to the plate, with the team needing to get on the board to extend the game. After her round-tripper, freshman shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) drew a walk, and eventually made her way to third base, but was stranded.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore second baseman Rain Vega (La Mirada HS) led off with a base hit, but was cut down at second base on a fielder's choice by freshman third baseman Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS). Freshman pinch-hitter Nicoal Magdaleno (La Habra HS) kept the inning alive when she drew a walk, but Lopez flew out to deep right field for the final out of the game.

Freshman pitcher Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) allowed seven runs (five earned) in 1 2/3 innings, with freshman Allisyn Udell (Whittier Christian HS) pitching the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits.
