Continuing their first South Coast Conference season, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team split their two matches on Friday. The Falcons (7-6, 1-2) recorded a 4-1 win over host College of the Desert, but suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of El Camino College. The team will take on Mt. San Antonio College at 10:00 a.m. in Walnut, with Cerritos being listed as the host.

Although it was a 4-1 loss to the Warriors, Cerritos was in position to win until the end, as three of the matches went to a tie-breaker set. The Falcons won one of those tie-breakers, as Madison Borja (La Mirada HS) and Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS) recorded a 21-15, 17-21, 15-8 decision in the #5 position. It was the first time all season they played in that position.

The match was decided by the #2 and #3 doubles pairs, with the Warriors squeaking out wins in both. At #2, Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) were able to extend the match to a third set after splitting the first two, 13-21, 22-20. However, the tie-breaker turned out to be a close 15-13 win for El Camino, with the #2 doubles match even closer. Jenni Solano (La Mirada HS) and Emily Gutierrez (Downey HS) dropped the first set, 7-21, but battled back for a 21-14 win in the second set. The tie-breaker went back and forth, but the tandem came up short in an extended 19-17 third set.

Against the host Roadrunners, Cerritos won all four of their matches in straight sets, with Borja and Rodriguez (21-5, 21-8) the only double winners on the day. Cortez and Soto-Castro had the closest match, but pulled out a 21-18, 22-20 victory, with Solano and Gutierrez winning at #3, 21-15, 21-13. Judit Navarro (Schurr HS) and Kira Magdaleno (Artesia HS) earned a 21-18, 21-15 win in the #5 position to improve their record in that spot to 4-1.
