Beach Volleyball: Final conference match ends in split

In their final South Coast Conference matches of the season, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team recorded a split. They posted a 5-0 win over College of the Desert and then came up short in a 3-2 decision against host Rio Hondo College. In their first season, the Falcons finished in fifth place with a 2-8 conference march, while they were 8-12 on the year. Next up will be the SCC Pairs Championships, which will take place next Friday and Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

In the win over the Roadrunners, Cerritos recorded three wins in a two-set sweep, while two of them went to a third set tie-breaker. At the top of the ladder, Jayda Harris-Amete (La Mirada HS) and Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) dropped a close first set, 19-21, but were able to battle back and come away with the win. In the second set, they registered a 21-16 win and in the tie-breaker pulled out a 17-15 decision for the team point. Additionally, the #3 pair of Jenni Solano (La Mirada HS) and Emily Gutierrez (Downey HS) were also extended to a third set. The tandem dropped the first set, 17-21, but stormed back for a 21-11 decision in the second set, and then capped off the match with a 15-10 score in the third set.

Registering sweeps were Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) and Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS), who had their hands full in the #2 pairs match. They squeezed out a 21-18 win in the first set and were able to come away with a 21-19 decision in the second set. In the #4 pairs match, the duo of Isabella Carrasco (Downey HS) and Juliette Casillas (La Serna HS) were efficient in their 21-16, 21-17 win, with the tandem of Kira Magdaleno (Artesia HS) and Judit Navarro (Schurr HS) posting a convincing 21-12, 21-16 win in the #5 pairs.

Although they lost to Rio Hondo, the Falcons were in the match until the end. Wins by Solano and Gutierrez (21-16, 21-13), as well as Madison Borja (La Mirada HS) and Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS) by a score of 21-11, 21-19 put Cerritos in position to pull out the win. The match came down to the #3 pairs match, where Castillo and Carrasco lost a heartbreaker, 18-21, 21-19, 13-15.
