Taking on a pair of South Coast Conference opponents on Wednesday, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team suffered losses to both Rio Hondo College (4-1) and host Mt. San Antonio College (5-0). The Falcons (7-11, 1-6) will look to snap their four-match losing skid next Friday when they take on host El Camino College at 10:00 a.m. in another conference match.

It was a tight match against the Roadrunners and it could have gone either way. Of the five doubles matches that were held, three of them went to a third set tie-breaker, with Rio Hondo coming out on top in each of the them. The lone winning tandem for the Falcons was to pairing of sophomore Jenni Solano (La Mirada HS) and freshman Emily Gutierrez (Downey HS), who played in the #3 position, and earned a solid 21-14, 21-18 win, which tied the team score at 1-1 at the time.

Two of the Falcon pairs won their first set, but dropped the next two. Sophomore Madison Borja (La Mirada HS) and freshman Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS) opened with a thrilling 22-20 win in their first set, but came up short, 18-21 in the second set, which forced the tie-breaker. With the match going back and fourth in the third set, Rio Hondo was able to eventually come away with a 15-10 win. It was the same with sophomore Kira Magdaleno (Artesia HS) and freshman Judit Navarro (Schurr HS) in the #5 match. After posting a 21-19 win in the first set, they dropped a 12-21 decision in the second set and could not rebound, as they fell, 10-15 in the tie-breaker.

Freshman Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) and Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) fought back in the second set after losing the first one, 18-21. Their 21-19 win in the second set forced a tie-breaker, which they dropped, 15-11. A couple of breaks with any of the three matches would have resulted in a win for the Falcons.

Against the Mounties, Soto-Castro and Cortez played in the #1 position for the first time all season, but dropped an 8-21, 18-21 match, while sophomore Jayda Harris-Amete (La Mirada HS) and freshman Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) moved to the #2 spot. They were defeated, 11-21, 21-23, while the other three tandems were also defeated in two sets.
