The Cerritos College baseball team didn't do sophomore starting pitcher Sebastian Frutos (Bellflower HS) any favors in their South Coast Conference game against Long Beach City College at Kincaid Field on Saturday. The Falcon defense committed five errors, which led to all of the Vikings runs in a 4-1 loss, which completed the sweep for LBCC. Cerritos (8-13, 3-5) will now travel to Santa Maria to play in the Allan Hancock Tournament during Spring Break. They will face Fresno City College at 6:00 p.m. next Tuesday to open the tournament.

The Vikings (12-10, 5-4) got on the board in the top of the first inning when a Ray Patchen ground ball rolled through the legs of freshman shortstop Jacob Valdez (Katella HS), which plated Derrick Garcia, who singled with two outs and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Throwing errors on potential double play balls by sophomore Tyler Acevedo (Sunny Hills HS/Irvine Valley CC) accounted for a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth inning.

Offensively, Cerritos was able to load the bases against pitcher Edgar Navar (3-2) in the fourth inning after freshman outfielder Joseph Rivera (Savanna HS) singled up the middle to start the inning. Freshman outfielder Johnny Martinez (Katella HS) and freshman third baseman Hayden Stevens (Katella HS) followed with bunt singles to load the bases. After a fielder's choice cut down Rivera at the plate, Valdez drove home the lone run with a sacrifice fly. But on the play, Stevens was cut down diving back to second base, which ended the threat.

The Falcons didn't get another baserunner until the bottom of the ninth when Rivera reached base on a fielding error. On the day, Cerritos had just four hits, two days after they collected just two hits in a 7-0 loss to LBCC.

Frutos (4-1) worked out of numerous jams during his 6 1/3 innings of work. He forced the Vikings to strand runners at second base in the first, third and four innings, while LB City had a runner left at third base in the fourth inning. He allowed three runs (all unearned) on six hits and struck out three batters. Freshman releif pitcher Christian Smith (Garden Grove HS) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of work and was charged with one unearned run.
