Baseball: Quartet of players receive All-SCC honors

A quartet of Cerritos College baseball players have been recognized for their efforts this season and were named 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference. The Falcons finished the season in sixth place and posted a 14-22 record on the year.

Earning 2nd Team All-SCC honors were sophomore pitcher Sebastian Frutos (Bellflower HS), freshman utility player Jared Robinson (Bishop Amat HS), freshman third baseman Hayden Stevens (Katella HS) and freshman outfielder Johnny Martinez (Katella HS). The freshman trio of pitcher Dylan Algra (Valley Christian HS), outfielder Jose Ayala (Maywood Academy HS) and shortstop Jacob Valdez (Katella HS) were selected as honorable mention.

On the year, Frutos posted a 5-1 record and one save with a 1.50 ERA in 66 innings of work. He started seven times in 15 appearances and had 38 strikeouts, while limiting batters to a .226 average. He lowered his ERA to 1.41 in conference play and had a 3-1 record. The team's pitching ace, Robinson, posted a 3-7 record with a 3.91 ERA in 78 1/3 innings and started 13 games. He led the team with 71 strikeouts in the mound, while he batted .253 at the plate with seven doubles, three triples and 15 RBI.

File Photo: Defensive stalwart Johnny Martinez was named 2nd Team All-SCC As for Stevens, he was the team's best clutch hitter, and recorded three game-winning hits on the season. Stevens batted .300 over the course of the season with a team-leading seven doubles, six triples and 26 RBI. He started every game this year at third base and led the conference with 70 assists and had a .942 fielding percentage. Martinez was the team's leading batter with a .336 average and also led the team in runs scored (24), hits (46) and stolen bases (8). He was flawless in the outfield in conference play and committed just one error all season.

Algra went 2-5 on the year and had a 4.96 ERA with one complete game in 52 2/3 innings of work. He posted 41 strikeouts on the year and started nine of the 14 games in which he appeared. Ayala hit .213 this season with 10 RBI and was 5-for-6 on stolen bases, with Valdez batting .217 with four doubles and five RBI.
