Paced by sophomore starting pitcher Franky Lopez (Dominguez HS) and a pair of sacrifice flies, the Cerritos College baseball team posted a 2-1 non-conference win at Chaffey College on Wednesday. The win was the third in a row for the Falcons (8-2), who turn around on Thursday at travel to Santa Ana College (7-1-1) for a 2:00 p.m. game.

The pitching dual between Lopez (2-0) and the Panthers Brock Mayer kept both teams off the board after each team pushed across a run. Chaffey took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run, while the Falcons countered with a single run in the top of the third inning.

Freshman outfielder Diego Orozco (Long Beach Wilson HS) led off with a single and advanced to second base on an error during a failed pickoff attempt. Orozco advanced to third on another error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alonso Reyes (Culver City HS).

Lopez was helped along in the third inning after Chaffey had a pair of runners reach base. Reyes threw out potential base stealer David Allen at third base for the second out of the inning and then got out of the inning. He retired 11 batters in a row before a one-out single in the seventh inning. Chance Kuhlman, who reached base on an error, tried to steal home, but was thrown out to thwart another scoring attempt.

The Falcons scored what would be the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore shortstop DJ Massey (Gahr HS/Central Arizona College) led off with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by Reyes. With one out, sophomore designated hitter Marco Lopez (Narbonne HS/Vanguard University) drove in Massey with a sacrifice fly.
