Playing Los Angeles Harbor College on Monday because of rain over the weekend, the Cerritos College baseball team scored six runs in the first inning, which propelled them to a 7-1 win. The South Coast Conference sweep of the Seahawks extended the winning streak for Cerritos (14-4, 5-1) to five in a row. They will come right back on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to start a three-game series with El Camino College (8-9, 3-3). First-year Falcons head coach Nate Fernley spent the last 16 seasons as the Warriors head coach.

In the win over LA Harbor, freshman pitcher Derek Valdez (Los Alamitos HS) was the recipient of the run support, as he tossed a seven-high complete game to improve his record to 5-0. He now shares the state lead for most wins in a season, while his ERA of 1.33 ranks 12th in the state.

In the top of the first inning, sophomore shortstop DJ Massey (Gahr HS/Central Arizona College) led off with a base hit and then came home on a home run from freshman third baseman Alonso Reyes (Culver City HS). It was the third home run of the season for Reyes, who hit two in the three-game series against the Seahawks. The inning continued with sophomore first baseman Mike Santos (Servite HS) and sophomore shortstop Anthony Bassett (Colegio Bautista de Managua, Nicaragua/Los Angeles Harbor College) each slapping singles, while they advanced a base on a passed ball. A walk to sophomore outfielder Nico Briones (Long Beach Millikan HS) loaded the bases.

Sophomore outfielder Anthony Godfrey (Long Beach Millikan HS) brought home a run with a walk, while consecutive RBI singles from freshman catcher Jorge Renteria (Gahr HS) and sophomore second baseman Marlon Oviedo (Colegio Parroquial San Rafael N#1, Nicaragua/Los Angeles Harbor College) made it a 5-0 game. The scoring was capped off when Massey reached on a fielder's choice that drove in the sixth run of the inning.

Through the first seven innings Valdez limited LA Harbor to just two singles and did not allow a walk on the day. He surrendered consecutive singles to lead off the eighth inning, but got a double play to help him get out of the inning. A throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs allowed the lone run of the game to score for the Seahawks.

Seven different players had hits for the Falcons, while five of them drove in runs in a balanced offensive attack.
