Competing at the College of the Sequoias Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's basketball team split their two games, with the second contest snapping their losing skid. The Falcons (8-4) opened with an 87-73 loss to the host Giants on Friday and followed that with an 81-60 win over Porterville College. The team will travel south on Wednesday and Thursday for a pair of games at MiraCosta College.

Cerritos vs. College of the Sequoias: Locked in a close battle with the Giants at halftime (44-42), the Falcons were unable to find their shot in the second half and suffered their fourth straight defeat. On the day, Cerritos was 25-for-59 (40.7%) from the field, while Sequoias hit at a 60.7%, which included Terri Miller converting 10-of-11 shots for the Giants. Looking to score their points three at a time, the Falcons made just 4-of-19 from three point range and were victimized by 19 turnovers. Sophomore guard Jalen Shores (Lakewood HS) led the team with 15 points, which included going 7-for-7 from the free throw line, with sophomore Dennis Johnson (Compton HS) providing 12 points off the bench. Freshman forward Everett May (Los Alamitos HS) added 11 points, with freshman Gary Williams (Dominguez HS) coming off the bench to produce eight points and five rebounds.

Cerritos vs. Porterville: The Falcons were able to snap their losing skid, thanks in part to freshman Christian Bennett (Redondo Union HS) connecting on 5-of-7 three-pointers for a season-high 15 points in an 81-60 victory. At one point in the first half, Cerritos led, 26-14 after a Shores layup, but the Pirates made a late run to get to within four points (26-22) at intermission. Shores opened the second half with a rare four-point play, as he connected on a three-pointer and converted a free throw while being fouled on the play. That seemed to jump-start the offense, as Cerritos went on an 11-0 to start the second half, with Shores accounting for six of those points. Bennett hit his first three-pointer with 13:44 remaining to give the Falcons a 44-27 lead and followed with another one on the team's next possession. Sophomore Gorden Boykins (St. Anthony HS) continued the offensive outburst with his own three-pointer and after sophomore Jonathan Salazar (St. John Bosco HS/New Mexico Military Institute CC) converted a pair of three throws, it was a comfortable 58-39 lead with 8:42 remaining. Bennett then went on to drain three of his next four three-pointers to close out the win. Salazar finished with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Shores had 18 points. Williams added seven points and nine rebounds off the bench, while Johnson posted eight points.
