On the strength of their 73-66 South Coast Conference South Division win over host El Camino College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College men's basketball team has moved into a tie for second place. The Falcons (16-7, 3-2) will look for their third win in a row on Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Compton College.
The team opened a 41-32 halftime lead on the strength of their outside shooting, as they converted 9-of-20 three-pointers. An early four-point play from freshman Everett May (Los Alamitos HS) helped jump-start the Falcons offense, as the team made three straight from long range, with May accounting for two of them. Sophomore Jalen Shores (Lakewood HS) and freshman Christian Bennett (Redondo Union HS) followed with three-pointers of their own, and after sophomore Dennis Johnson (Compton HS) hit a short jumper, it was an 8-0 run for Cerritos to open a 26-17 advantage.
Once again, it was May who drained consecutive three-pointers, as he scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half.
It was a back-and-forth game in the second half, as the Falcons led 51-49 with 8:33 left. The lead never got to be more than nine points (64-55) after sophomore Justin Stephens (Gahr HS) converted on a tip-in with 2:50 left on the clock. Cerritos netted 9-of-11 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
May led the team with 18 points, while sophomore Gorden Boykins (St. Anthony HS) finished with 12 points and six rebounds, with Shores posting 11 points. Bennett came off the bench to add 10 points, while freshman Gary Williams (Dominguez HS) had a good all-around game with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
