M. Basketball: Fourth straight win keeps Falcons a game out of first place

On the strength of their 77-67 South Coast Conference South Division win over host Los Angeles Southwest College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College men's basketball team remains a game out of first place. They will take on first place Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday at 7:00 p.m., with a win moving the team into a first place tie.

In the win over the Cougars (12-11, 4-3), the Falcons (18-7, 5-2) came out shooting to start the second half after taking a 34-30 lead into intermission. Freshman Everett May (Los Alamitos HS) took the opening tip and hit a three-pointer and after he scored five straight points, Cerritos held a 44-35 advantage. The lead swelled to 46-35 after freshman Gary Williams (Dominguez HS) converted a pair of free throws with 16:47 remaining on the clock.

The lead improved to 16 points (54-38) after May and sophomore Dennis Johnson (Compton HS) each knocked down three-pointers. Sophomore Jalen Shores (Lakewood HS) then scored the team's next nine consecutive points, and Cerritos led, 66-49 with 7:35 left on the clock. The lead remained in double digits for the rest of the game.

May, who converted 5-of-7 three-pointers on the night, led the team with 18 points, while Shores finished with 15 points and four rebounds. As for Williams and sophomore Gorden Boykins (St. Anthony HS), they combined for 21 points, with Boykins also adding seven assists and six rebounds. Johnson contributed nine points off the bench.
