In their first South Coast Conference meet of the season, the Cerritos College men's swimming team defeated Long Beach City College, 170-110, but came up short against El Camino College, 144.5-136.5. The Falcons (1-1) saw the meet come down to the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the Warriors winning the event by 14 seconds. Cerritos will now take a week off before they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a conference meet along with Rio Hondo College.

Freshman Joshua Owens (Kennedy HS) was a part of both first place finishes for the Falcons, as he swam a leg of the 200-yard medley relay and also won the 50-yard freestyle, while he finished second in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle. The quartet of sophomore Enrique Hidalgo (Kennedy HS), freshman Eugene Runas (Long Beach Millikan HS), freshman Nathan Umpornpuckdi (Kennedy HS) and Owens edged out Long Beach City by one second with a time of 1:42.30 in the 200-yard medley relay.

Owens led a trio of Falcons in the 50-yard freestyle, as his time of 22.44 edged Hidalgo (22.55), with sophomore Josh Hanein (Warren HS/Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ CC) in third place at 23.80. In the 100-yard freestyle, Owens was beat by Michael Carrillo of LB City in 48.25, while his time of 49.25 was good for second place. It was Mario Ali Espinosa of El Camino that took first place in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.43, while Owens was a close second place in 1:52.25.

The Falcons picked up a second and fourth place finish in the 1-meter diving competition, as sophomore Scott Robles (Murrieta Valley HS) came in second place with 185.40 points and sophomore Mark Zuniga (Downey HS) recorded 116.95 points. Cerritos had a chance to move up a couple of places, but sophomore Daric Johnson (Whittier HS) came up short on a dive that could have scored him more points and settled for sixth place.

Hidalgo was beat out for first place in the 100-yard backstroke and took second place in 58.99, while freshman Albert Kim (Cerritos HS) was third in 1:01.27.
