M. Water Polo: Cerritos wins first three games

The Cerritos College men's water polo team made a great impression on all of the teams that are competing at the Navy Labor Day Open in Annapolis (MD) on Friday, as they opened with three straight wins. The Falcons (3-0), who opened with a 22-8 win over Rockford, a club team from Michigan, followed with a 17-14 victory over South Coast Conference opponent and then handed Lindenwood (MO) University a 17-8 setback. The team will face College of Notre Dame (OH) and Johns Hopkins University on Saturday.

Sophomore goalie Michael Skinas (La Serna HS) shard duties with freshman Coleton Perez (Western HS) in the opening win, while Skinas recorded a combined 14 saves in the next two games. Offensively, freshman Miguel Garcia (Montebello HS) scored eight times against Rockford and followed with three more in each of the other two games, while sophomore Christian Flores (Montebello HS) returned after playing his freshman season in 2006 and tallied 10 goals in the three games. In his freshman year, Flores scored 102 goals, while was one off the school record.

In addition to the 12 combined goals by Garcia and Flores in the first game, freshman Joshua Owens (Western HS) contributed three scores, while Perez had four saves to go with the two steals by Skinas. Garcia and sophomore Chad Castro (Whittier HS) each scored three times in the physical win over the Mounties, while Skinas posted seven saves. The day ended with Flores (five goals) and Garcia (three goals) joined by freshman Jacon Erdtsiek (Western HS), who had two goals. Skinas posted seven saves and two steals.
