M. Water Polo: Falcons win three of four games at tourney

Over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's water polo team won three of four games at the Riverside Tournament. The Falcons (17-2), who lead the state in wins, suffered their only loss to the last undefeated team in the state. On the first day, the team defeated Palomar College (13-8) and then saw their 11-match winning streak come to an end in a 14-11 setback against Golden West College. They followed on Saturday with wins over the host Tigers (12-10) and Los Angeles Valley College (13-10). Cerritos will host Mt. San Antonio College at 4:15 p.m. with a piece of first place in the South Coast Conference on the line. The Falcons are 3-0, while the Mounties are 4-0.

Cerritos vs. Palomar: Locked in a tight game in the first half, the Falcons scored in the final :10 seconds of the second quarter on a goal by sophomore Angel Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. They took control of the game with the first three goals to start the second half, with sophomore Israel Rodriguez (Whittier HS) accounting for two of the goals and sophomore Jesus Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) the other goal. The trio of the Rojas brothers and Rodriguez combined for 11 of the team's goals, while the goalkeeping tandem of freshmen Matthew Contreras (Montebello HS) and Jason Curiel (Schurr HS) teamed up for seven saves.

Cerritos vs. Golden West: Facing the top team in the state, the Falcons found themselves trailing 4-1 after the first period. After closing to within 7-5 by halftime on goals by four different players, Cerritos was able to tie the game at 7-7 on a goal by freshman Kameron Simmons (Evanston Township, IL HS) at 6:18 and then an Angel Rojas goal with 4:38 remaining in the third period. The Rustlers (14-0) scored the next two goals before Angel Rojas and Jesus Rojas each scored, with the latter coming with :08 seconds left in the quarter. In the fourth, Cerritos drew to within 11-10 with 5:58 left, but Golden West went on to score three of the final four goals of the game to pull out the win. Angel Rojas had three goals and five assists in the game, while Simmons, Jesus Rojas and freshman Ever Resendiz (Colegio de Bachilleres 6, Mexico) each scored twice.

Cerritos vs. Riverside: Leading the entire way, the Falcons were led by Angel Rojas and his six goals, with Curiel turning away 10 shots while playing the entire game in goal. Simmons and Jesus Rojas each scored twice, with five different players scoring at least once.

Cerritos vs. Los Angeles Valley: Taking on the Monarchs for the second time this season, the Falcons broke a 6-6 tie game at intermission with five third period goals. Angel Rojoas scored the go-ahead goal with 6:27 left in the third quarter, followed by a goal from Simmons. After LA Valley responded, goals by Rodriguez (3:29) and Simmons (2:52) gave the team a 10-7 advantage.. When the Monarchs drew to within 11-9 in the fourth quarter, the Falcons received goals from Angel Rojas and Resendiz for a three-goal cushion, with neither team scoring in the final 2:07 of the match. Angel Rojas capped off the weekend with six goals, while Resendiz had four goals, with Curiel playing the entire game in goal and recording five saves.
