M. Water Polo: Tournament nets pair of wins

On Friday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team picked up a pair of wins at the Santa Monica Tournament. The Falcons (20-2) are the first team in the state to reach 20 wins and defeated both Saddleback College (16-9) and Fullerton College (20-9). They will host rival Long Beach City College on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m, for first place in the South Coast Conference and the #1 seed in the conference tournament.

Cerritos vs. Saddleback: The Falcons jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first quarter and led by as much as 10-1 in the first half. The team was led by sophomore Angel Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela), who accounted for six goals and five assists in the victory, with freshman Ever Resendiz (Colegio de Bachilleres 6, Mexico) posting four goals. Seven different players scored for Cerritos, while eight players recorded at least one assist, with sophomore Anthony Govani (Garden Grove HS) finishing with six steals. Goalies Jason Curiel (El Rancho HS) and Matthew Contreras (Montebello HS) combined for eight saves.

Cerritos vs. Fullerton: With very little recovery time, the Falcons broke open a 4-2 game in the first quarter and led 7-3 after the first eight minutes. Four players scored in the second quarter, with Govani getting two goals, as Cerritos extended their lead to 12-4. It was more of the same in the second half, with five different players scoring in the third quarter. By the end of the game, Cerritos had 10 players score, led by Rojas with seven goals and three assists. The quartet of Govani, along with freshmen Bryan Santis (La Serna HS), Salvador Orozco (Montebello HS) and Jonathan Butz (Los Altos HS) each accounted for a pair of goals. Curiel and Contreras had a combined nine saves.
