M. Water Polo: Falcons score record number of goals

On Wednesday at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College, the Cerritos College men's water polo team scored a school-record number of goals in their 30-9 South Coast Conference win. The win by the Falcons (24-4, 5-1) closed out their regular season and they will compete in the South Coast Conference Tournament on November 3-5 at Pasadena City College.

It was a close 8-5 game after the first quarter, but after that, Cerritos went on to score 22 of the next 26 goals, including an 8-1 margin in the second quarter to take a 16-6 lead into halftime.

On the day, 12 different players scored for the Falcons, with sophomore Angel Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) leading the team with eight goals and three assists, His goal tally gives him 127 on the season, which also leads the state. He set a school record of 155 goals last season, while his 282 goals are also a school record for career goals.

Freshmen Preston Medina (Downey HS) and Jonathan Butz (Los Altos HS) both recorded a season-high four goals in the win, with freshman Salvador Orozco (Montebello HS) chipping in with three goals. Sophomore Jesus Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) led the defensive effort with five steals, with his three assists giving him a state-leading 72, while freshmen Ever Resendiz (Colegio de Bachilleres 6, Mexico) and Julio Arroyo (Montebello HS) had four steals each to help the team recorded 27 steals for the day.

Freshmen goalkeepers Matthew Contreras (Montebello HS) and Jason Curiel (El Rancho HS) combined for four saves in the win over the Beavers.
